I've known Maria for a few years now and she has been over in the UK working on her teaching qualifications in Kent. After she finished and before she headed back to Spain to start a more permanent job, she got in touch with me organising a portrait session for herself. I think it's a lovely idea, and she felt in such a good position mentally and physically, she wanted something to remember her good times in the UK and a time when she was in a good place in her life, ready to start a new chapter. We had a great time catching up while capturing some lovely images that really show off her bubbly, fun personality. Aided by some flowers and a folding fan as some quirky props!
Every now and then I come across a photo of the arched bridge in Aylesford near Maidstone and it always reminds me that I would love to go there, first to have a look, but most of all to include it in a photo shoot somehow. I made an effort to have a look around the nearby Priory too and when we had a clear evening, Ellis and I headed down there for a summery sunset photo session! We had a great time playing with the lovely warm light, and Ellis has the perfect prop with her straw hat too. It was great playing with some new lighting techniques to really bring out the backdrops around the priory and the lovely little village of Aylesford - what a fab evening!
I've been meaning to do a poppy field photo session for months now and back in June on my way to a weekend away I investigated an area just outside of the village of Boxley in Kent which is a known hotspot for poppies in season, and it was glorious! A real carpet of red, so I knew I had to come back here. I got in touch with Katie and wanted to shoot sometime around sunset to get a mix of daylight and golden hour photos. It was only a week later and amazingly most of the poppies had died down. Despite this we still had a great time (and we did find a few poppies still lurking) and it was a chance to play with new lighting techniques too! I love the dramatic photos of Katie as the sun was going down.
After some time away in late April and Early May walking the North Downs Way, I was keen to take some gorgeous photos amongst the abundance of bluebells around the Kent countryside. I asked if Emily wanted to be involved off the back of our great first session over the winter months in Mote Park and we headed to the Hucking Estate near Maidstone (I was last here a few years ago for Chris and Charlotte's pre-wedding session, and the bluebells were out then too!) We had a great time chasing the gorgeous light amongst the trees, and the spring flowers didn't disappoint. What really sets the photos off though is Emily's lovely red dress - the perfect striking contrast to the surroundings.
Hampstead Heath, and in particular the Hill Garden and Pergola have been on my list of places to explore since I saw a fellow photographer go there with a couple for a pre-wedding session. It looked such a magical place I was keen to go there myself and take some photos. I didn't have a couple on this occasion but I did get together with Maria who lives (relatively) locally and we had a good wander around. It was bitterly cold that day but despite struggling with the low temperatures we got some great images from the afternoon as the sun was setting over north London.
I first met Sofia and her mum Sonja at a charity photo day a few years ago and it was a great event to be a part of while raising some money for good causes. She is heavily involved in pageantry work and has been the 'face of' several times through her teen years. This was a great session exploring some local woodland in the spring sunshine, and we even got to play with some smokebombs too! Sofia is such a lovely, cheerful girl and clearly being in front of a camera didn't worry her at all! We were thankful for her mum being on the scene too as she helped with some lighting and general bag carrying - thanks Sonja!
I got in touch with Allie again off the back of our great shoot last summer. I know I wanted to do some more of my own projects over the winter period, and had some great ideas for locations that were local for us both in Folkestone. At the tail end of a sunny December day we headed down to the harbour for some fashion shots with a mix of gorgeous natural light as the sun went down and a bit of added light with some flash to really make the shots pop and sparkle! All of these were within such a small part of the town and they really showcase the variety of locations that Folkestone on a sunny day has to offer - marvellous!
I got together with Charlotte on a chilly day on the edge of Canterbury for what was to be a pretty epic shoot, lasting a good 6 hours! We took advantage of the good weather and hit up a series of scenic and tourist spots around the city for some winter fashion and lifestyle shots. I wanted to incorporate some flash to add a bit more lighting as it was a bit grey and overcast at times, and I think it really compliments the natural light. Charlotte was incredibly patient during the day, and her strong dance and ballet background made an appearance too with a few choice poses!
The winter months are often a quiet time for me, as most of the weddings I photograph tend to be in the summer (although this year my last one was on the 23rd December!) so it's a great time to get out and practice some basic portraiture skills, and for this shoot in Mote Park I got together with Emily for some lifestyle/winter fashion. It was quite a grey overcast day so I used this opportunity to bring in some flash to add a bit more pop and vibrancy to the photos. They still look amazingly natural and the idea of good flash use is to make it look like it wasn't even used - and that's exactly the look I was going for!
I'd been trying to find a good time to take Allie out for a shoot for a good few weeks, but trying to juggle our erratic schedules and find a good weather window meant it took a while before we found an opportunity - but I'm so glad we waited! We headed up onto the white cliffs near Dover (you may remember a styled bridal shoot here) in that golden hour before sunset on a beautiful evening and wow, just look at the light we were blessed with! Allie was great fun to work with and she was keen to come onboard with my bohemian style idea for the session too which was great. I love the outcome from this evening, the images look amazing!
